*****

It is exactly 50 years today since Maitreem Bhajatha, the immortal poem composed by Kanchi Mahaswamigal, was rendered at the United Nations in New York on October 23rd, 1966 on the occasion of the UN day, by Bharat Ratna Smt. M.S. Subbalakshmi!

On the previous day of the concert, she had a very bad throat and could hardly breathe. She did not even tell it her husband Sri Sadashivam or even to her daugter Smt Radha but started praying to Kanchi Mahaperiyava. Till the time she entered the concert hall and even after sitting in the dais her throat was very bad. After reaching the dais with sincere heart she invoked Periyava and cried “OM”, Immediately she was able to feel the difference and miraculously regained her voice, which sounded sweeter than ever!

She finally sang “Maitreem Bhajatha” composition to a standing ovation.

The tune for the song was set by Shri Vasant Desai and he was paid Rs. 501 by Shri T. Sadasivam, MSS' husband, in 1966!

MSS is seen doing Pada Pooja to Mahaswamigal. And the other one is a picture singing at the UN on the same day, October 23rd in 1966!

Shankara.
