Below are the words of Shri Sampath Kumar who was a Producer in Doordarshan Madras in the 1980s.

This video was produced by Doordarshan in 1980s and I was the privileged producer to have the bhagyam.It was filmed on the 2500th jayanthi of Adhi Sankara Bhagavatpathal.(Paramacharyal was weak with two days of continuous upavasam(Narsiha Jayanthi followed by Grahanam)
He had never agreed to be videoed in spite of several attempts. He shunned cameras and the publicity they gave. Whenever I went to Kanchi mutt, I tried to capture Him on video. But failed. He would not agree. Once we went to the mutt to cover the visit of Rajiv Gandhi and before his arrival I asked my cameraman to film the great Acharya without His knowledge. He did so. But when Parmacharya some how noticed it He closed the windows and doors moved away.

Rajiv came and had an in-camera meeting with him At the end of the meeting Paramacharyal allowed us to film them together. Of course the Prime minister needed it, not the Acharya.
I was happy that i could use some of the shots I took without his knowledge.

But on that day, during the telecast, the video got stuck and only the portion which was filmed with His permission went on air. This I felt was a miracle. Others may or may not agree .To me it was a miracle. Ok with this background, I approached Parmacharyal with a request to video His speech which He was giving after almost 20 years. I must thank Vaitha, a devotee close to the mutt for suggesting this.To my joy he agreed. His voice was weak, hardly heard even by those sitting within a range of two feet.


I kept the microphone very close, and we got a wonderful video, a rare one.

After many years, I was thrilled to see it again. I do not have a copy of it myself.
