"Do you know that Mahavishnu and mosquitoes are similar in some ways?!"

Once Kanchi Swamigal told some people at the Matam, "Do you know that Mahavishnu and Mosquitoes are one and the same in some ways?!" And as usual, He Himself started to clarify that puzzle.

"In Lord Vishnu's hand the Chakra is spinning continuously and so does the mosquito which keeps spinning and buzzing near us all the time. Bad people will shy away from looking at Lord Vishnu due to His luminosity and so do people having irritation in the eyes will be unable to look at the mosquito. Lord Vishnu plays with Shruti (Vedas) and a mosquito keeps buzzing around our Shrutis (ears)."

The reason He narrated this analogy is because of the mosquito menace at place He had camped. He used to console people with this,

"If we remember that mosquito is none other than Lord Vishnu Himself, then we can sleep in Happiness undisturbed by the mosquito bites!"

He had this knack of dealing with any adversity in such a nice and humourous manner.

Once there was a long spiritual talk being given by someone. Swamigal listened to it patiently. And then the talk ended. After that Swamigal told that person,

"What, just because you had the 'saakku' (good excuse) did you speak for such a long time?!".

He continued, "You were sitting on a 'saakku' (sack) and giving the talk, I was referring to that saakku only, do not worry!".

"So, you are going to keep My name for the hospital?"

I went with my wife to Kanchipuram in the mid nineteen eighties to have Swamigal's darshan. The purpose of the visit was to obtain His blessings for building the eye hospital that I had planned for a long time. I prostrated to Him and placed the plan for the hospital building before Him.

"Oh, you are going to construct an eye hospital?", He remarked.

I nodded my head affirmatively.

"So, you are going to keep My name for the hospital?"

I told Him, "Yes".

He then closed His eyes for sometime. And then He placed the plan on His Head and again closed His eyes! When He opened His eyes, He held a coconut in His hand for a while and gave it to me.

"Go ahead", said He and blessed me!

Dr RV Ramani had come to our office today to speak about the activites of Sankara Eye Foundation (not affiliated to Sankara Nethralaya). The word 'Sankara' caught my eye and I decided to attend the talk. As he started with his presentation, the third or the fourth slide had pictures of Mahaswamigal, Pudhu Periyava and Bala Periyava and I was thrilled to say the least! He mentioned that the Eye Foundation was running with Their blessings. After the presentation was over I spent a few minutes with him, when he narrated the above incident to me.

"It is like offering water produced by Chandrakanta stone to the moon itself!"

The Sanskrit name for moonstone is Chandrakanta mani (Chandra is one of the names for the moon, Kanta means light, and Mani means jewel).

In India, moonstone has long been regarded as sacred. It’s said that moonstone grows under the influence of the moon, and as it forms, it absorbs the moon’s magical powers.  Indian tradition holds that this moonlight gem helps us befriend the moon, and that the stone itself symbolizes the Third Eye, or enlightenment. In Ayurvedic medicine, moonstone is used to influence the body’s magnetic field, a clear connection to the moon’s gravitational influence on the Earth.

Kanchi Swamigal says the moonstone absorbs the cool rays of moon and produces water in the form of cool moisture. In the last verse of Soundarya Lahari Adi Shankara tells Ambal thus in utmost humility:

"Amma, is it something noteworthy and something to be proud of, that I composed the 100 verses on you? Would have this been possible without your mercy on me? Will not the world make fun of me if I bragged that it was 'me' who had composed the 100 verses? My saying thus will be akin to showing camphor light to the sun. Or offering water that was produced by the Chandrakanta stone to the moon. Or doing Abhishekam uttering mantras to the ocean with the handful of water from the ocean itself. For the camphor gets its life from the sun, the Chandrakanta stone its powers from the moon and the water belongs to the ocean itself! My act is as laughable a matter as these three acts are!"

Thus is the bhashyam, interpretation of the last verse by Kanchi Periyava in Deivathin Kural about the humility of His revered Guru.

In Brahadeeswarar temple in Thanjavur, a rare stone called Chandrakanta stone is installed under the Linga which has a strange characteristic of making the sanctum sanctorum cool in summer and warm in winter.

Tittai is one of the holy places, extolled by the Saivite saint-singer, Tirugnanasambandhar, who hails the sanctity of the place as more superior to even the glory of the Lord Himself. The Lingamurti in the sanctum sanctorum receives an eternal ablution of dripping water from the Moolasthana Vimana, which has a unique ceiling embedded with a Chandrakanta stone in the centre.

Moonstones are  considered sacred stones in India. They are always displayed on a yellow cloth, which is a sacred color. According to Vedic legend, a battle was fought between Lord Vishnu and Bali, the demon god. Vishnu destroyed Bali by breaking his body into several pieces, which fell to the earth as different jewels. It is said that the 'Chandrakanta' or moonstone was formed from the gleam of Bali's eyes. It was believed that the finest blue moonstones were washed ashore by the tides every 21 years, when the sun and moon were in an astrologically harmonious aspect to each other.

As the moon is considered to represent feminine energy and rules the tides, so the moonstone came to be seen to affect the "female" areas of life and was associated with water. It became known as the traveler's stone because it was said to protect those traveling by night or by sea. Moonstones were used for protection during pregnancy and at birth, while in the Middle East, women would sew moonstones into their clothing when they wished for a child. Likewise, amulets of moonstones were hung from trees to ensure an abundant crop.

The moonstone is associated with the astrological sign of Cancer and is an alternate birthstone for June. Some of the metaphysical properties that have been ascribed to the moonstone include its supposed ability to help stabilize the emotions and bring a sense of calm to the wearer of the stone. It is said to enhance intuition and spiritual development. An elixir was traditionally made of crushed moonstone to help cure insomnia, and the stone was also used to treat sleepwalking.

"Difference between a Sarangi and this Mandolin?" --- Mahaperiyava to Srinivas!

"When I was seventeen years old I was fortunate to play the mandolin in the august presence of Kanchi Mahaperiyava. His Holiness fully discerned the mandolin notes to be the expression of an art enthusiast and listened to the entire kutcheri with complete involvement and joy.

"What is the difference between a Sarangi and this Mandolin that you play?", He asked me after the concert.

What struck me indelibly was the child like enthusiasm and simplicity with which HH got to 'know' the details from me in the conversation that ensued. Something which cannot be described with mere words!

Not only that, He blessed me by touching the mandolin with His hands. Just thinking of that incident sends me into raptures, tears streaming out! And the Spatika chain (made of crystals) that He gave me resides in my Heart permanently!"

Soundarya Lahari in the divine voice of HH Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal!

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BziSWahcH3DZSkpXMU43Q3Jka1k/edit?usp=sharing (please click this link to download the mp3 onto your device)

In Deivathin Kural Kanchi Swamigal has expounded the meanings of the verses by plumbing the deepest of depths, just an astonishing bhashyam it is. And He goes on to say, "If anyone can give a different interpretation (different to what I have said) to the verses, then nothing can make Me more happpier!".  Goes to reveal the towering height of humility in Him, His unsurpassable love for Ambal and His supreme bhakthi and respect for His Guru Adi Shankara.

This is quite a powerful sthothram, with each of the 100 verses laden with a specific benefical effect. So let us take a resolve to memorize it and chant on Fridays.

In time for a blessed Navarathri to you all.

"Oh God! Something happened!"

"You see, there is a village Kilpennathur near Thiruvannamalai. Near that is another village called Mekalur. Some people used to feed this Beggar many many years before. There is a tank. Some advocates from around were there. We were all talking and laughing!

This Beggar asked, "When is Paramacharya coming?"

He was coming in palanquin already and was there in 5 or 10 minutes! Oh God! This Beggar was talking and laughing!

Paramacharya had a dip in the tank. He chanted a mantra and made people repeat it and did Surya Namaskar. He prostrated to the Sun God. Then He suddenly moved to... there is a Navagraha temple... He went round that and reached Srinivasa Iyer's place where He was staying.

Oh God! Something happened! This Beggar slept!... (Smile) Just as it happened with J. Krishnamurthi!

Then Paramcharya's voice came loudly, "Um... Um...!""

*** This Beggar slept --- This implies that HH Yogi Ramsuratkumar went into the the state of Samadhi.

Bhagavan now looked around and smiled in that sweet way of His, which drew smiles all around. Again Bhagavan closed His eyes for a few minutes.

*****
The last two sentences were spoken by Ma Devaki in 1992.

The above incident with Paramacharya happened in 1948 and was narrated by HH Yogi Ramsuratkumar to His disciple Ma Devaki and others in 1992.

Typed the whole thing from Ma Devaki's diary.

Swasthi Vachanam ஸ்வஸ்தி வாசனம் स्वस्ति वाचनम्

Swasthi (from the Sanskrit words su + asti = well + being (सु + अस्ति = स्वस्ति) means prosperity, auspiciousness, well being. These mantras are usually chanted in the beginning of any religious function, praying to usher prosperity and well being. The word 'Swasthi' appears from the time of the ancient Vedas and Upanishads. It is found in many shAnti-pATha-s (शान्ति-पाठ), including e.g. in the Mudaka Upanishad (muNDaka-upaniShad मुण्डक-उपनिषद्) -

Which roughly translates to -

May we hear good with the ears, and see good with the eyes. May our body be strong and healthy, may we sing praises. Indra, who is well-praised, is good for/to us. Pusha (pooShaa, pUShA, पूषा), the all knowing, is good for/to us. Tarkshya (tArkShya, तार्क्ष्य), the all saving is good for/to us. Brihaspati (bRihaspati, बृहस्पति) is good for/to us. Let there be three fold peace.

Here the word 'swasthi' is used four times, in lines 3 and 4, as the first word of each half - स्वस्ति

Here is Swasthi Vachanam ஸ்வஸ்தி வாசனம் in Tamil

Thanks a ton to Shri Suresh Krishnamoorthy who had posted this Tamil version in Sage of Kanchi group in Facebook many months back.

Recital can be accessed here:

Thanks a bunch to Vidya for running them by me.

Here is an interesting anecdote from kamakoti.org:சம'த்தோடு சேர்ந்த நிலைதான் 'சாந்தி' : 'தம'த்தோடு சேர்நத் நிலை 'தாந்தி எனப்படும்.

Swasthi Vachanam for Sringeri Acharyas (Sringeri Guru Birudavali)

Here is the lovely Swasthi Vachanam recital for Sringeri Acharyas:

Thanks a ton to Shri Mohan Ramiah for sharing it with me.

Swasthi Vachanam mantras are regularly chanted in marriages to bestow prosperity on the newly married couple. Priests chanted these mantras even from days of Lord Rama's time and beyond as can be seen from the below anecdotes:

****

Dasaratha’s announcement was received with a joyous uproar. He had to wait until the sound died down and then he asked Vasistha’s advice for organising the ceremony.
And just as our brahmin priests advise us today, Vasishta too gave a list of things necessary.
“Please arrange by early morning tomorrow,  in the king’s palace, in the place set aside for sacred fire, gold and other metals, precious gems, articles of worship (balin), also herbs, garlands of white flowers, roasted corn, honey and clarified butter in separate containers, fresh clothes, chariot weapons of every kind, an army of four divisions, an elephant possessing auspicious marks, white fans made of Yak’s hair, a standard, white parasol, a hundred golden vessels shining like lustre of fire, bull with horns plaited in gold and complete tiger skin.”
He asked them to use sandalwood, flowers and incense to make the city fragrant. He asked for rice to be cooked with curds and milk in large quantities to feed a hundred, thousand brahmins. Brahmins had to be invited for the स्वस्तिवाचनम्,  utterance of the word svasti – may good happen, as soon as the sun arose. Flags had to be flown and the highways needed to be sprinkled with fragrant water.
Well dressed Entertainers, Alert and Armed soldiers, Suitable people bearing garlands,  gifts and food had to be stationed at the appropriate places – the king’s apartments, gates and temples.
Vamadeva and Vasishtha informed the king of other arrangements to be made also and then went ahead and made the arrangements. Then they came back and intimated that all the arrangements were made.
Dasaratha then sent Sumantra to bring Sri Rama in a chariot.
