Veda Patashala by the banks of Mother Cauvery!
A humble effort in the propagation of the Vedas has developed into a mission for this scholar. Sri Gururama Ghanapadigal, who has five young disciples, is engaged in the task of raising a building for Sri Mantra Peeteswari Veda Gurukulam, on the banks of the Cauvery in Kumbakonam.
“I always wanted to teach and was doing that after completing my studies,” says the 37-year old pandit, who has been a Veda Adhyapaka for the past 15 years. Hailing from Unjalur village near Karur, Sri Ghanapadigal, son of a school teacher, had initial training in Chennai and went to Palakkadu for higher studies.
“It was my guru, who motivated me to adopt disciples for tutelage. He said that the children should grow up in the right atmosphere without distractions. That’s the only way in which they will imbibe the lifestyle that a practitioner should follow,” explains Sri Gururam, Salakshana Ghanapadigal. A formidable task for a man in Chennai with a mother, young wife and child to support.
But he decided to make the move. To go away from Madras, which offered lucrative scope for pandits, well versed in both Veda and Sastra. He chose a spot near the Cauvery and hired a house to which he shifted. For the past 18 months, the five students have integrated into the family of the guru, who leads by example.
Two of them are already learning Ghanam lessons.
“It is a sacrifice that parents make for a cause. Having trained in a gurukulam, I know the feelings on both sides and therefore was aware of the responsibility it places on the guru and his family,” says the ghanapadigal, who has been blessed by the Acharyas of both Kanchi and Sringeri. “My wife showers maternal affection on them and my daughter does not wish to enjoy any privileges that her brothers do not,” he adds.
The fulfilment has prompted Sri Gururama Ghanapadigal to find a bigger place to continue his mission. Land close to his present residence was acquired and construction is on. Thanks to bank loan and philanthropic friends, the project has taken off but funds are needed to complete the construction.

Teachings of Adi Shankara will be part of School Syllabus in MP!
Madhya Pradesh Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday February 9th, 2017 announced plans to include lessons on the life and preaching of Adi Shankaracharya in school syllabus.
"It is because of the extraordinary preaching of Adi Shankaracharya that India has cultural unity and integrity. A lesson on His life and preaching will be included in school syllabus in Madhya Pradesh," Chouhan announced at a function organized to mark the entry of 'Namami Devi Narmade Sewa Yatra' in Omkareshwar town.
In order to make people aware of Adi Shankaracharya's teachings, the State government will set up an institute in Omkareshwar, he said. A light and sound show will soon start on the banks of Narmada river to spread information about the importance of Shankaracharya's preaching, the river Narmada and Omkareshwar, the CM added.
A "grand statue" of Adi Shankaracharya will be set up in the holy town, he said, announcing a slew of measures for development of Omkareshwar, including waving of entry tax on tourists levied by the local body and building a museum and interpretation centre.
"It was in Omkareshwar that young Adi Shankara met His Guru Govinda Bhagavatpada in a cave and attained highest spiritual elevations. He founded the four 'matha' (monastries) that helped in the historical development, revival and spread of Advaita Vedanta ," Chouhan said.
On demand from the saints, he also announced regulated flow of water in Narmada river at various places round the year. He said the state government has already decided to shut liquor shops within 5 km of Narmada banks.

Omkareshwar is a Hindu temple dedicated to God Shiva. It is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. It is on an island called Mandhata or Shivapuri in the Narmada river; the shape of the island is said to be like the Hindu ॐ Om symbol.
